A cyclone struck West Bengal on June 11, 2013 at 6:45 p.m. and caused huge devastation in the coastal areas; the meteorological department had predicted it well in advance and proper safety arrangements had been taken. Wind at the speed of 80 km/h blew across the coastal areas causing unprecedented damage and destruction. Approximately 72 people were killed; hundreds of homes have been affected and damaged. More than 2 lakh people had to take shelter in relief camps. Normal life came to a standstill. It will take many months of hard-work to bring life to normalcy in the state. The Government did a great job in advance to evacuate people from the vulnerable areas.
The entire nation has come forward to lend a helping hand to the cyclone victims. Central Government, State Governments, Union Territories, Multi-National Corporations, Big Business Houses, Celebrities, Sportsmen and women, schools, colleges, and common people have been contributing to Chief Minister’s Relief Fund generously. Even the help from foreign countries is pouring in. It will take many months of hard-work to bring life to normalcy in the state.
