Fire engulfs Seemapuri slums

NEW DELHI, January 15 : A huge blaze gutted the city's Seemapuri area yesterday night killing five people and injuring many others. According to eye witnesses, the fire started when a roadside bonfire started by some homeless beggars to shield themselves from the cold got out of control and spread through the slums.

The fire consumed two lives on the spot while three others died on the way to the hospital. As many as 17 people have been admitted in the City hospital with severe burns. The fire brigade reached the spot fifteen minutes late but was unable to control the blaze efficiently due to narrow roads. The improper access to the inner areas of the slum resulted in loss of precious time and caused further damage.

Seemapuri is home to around 350 families, mostly illegal immigrants from Bangladesh. Many poor beggars and rag-pickers lost their dwellings as well as life savings. Government efforts to rehabilitate the affected families are being carried out.
