World Happiness Report: A look at the ingredients of happiness

The World Happiness Report 2018, released earlier this month, had some grim news for India. Of the 156 countries, India ranked 133 — a steady decline from 111 in 2013. Led by Finland, the Scandinavian countries topped the charts. Released by the UN, WHR is based on a Gallup survey where respondents are asked to rate their lives on a scale of 1 to 10, with 0 being the worst possible life.

Critics of WHR abound. Some feel the rankings are disconnected from reality. For example, amid unrest, strikes, protest and starvation, Togo in Africa witnessed the sharpest jump in ranking from 158 in 2015 to 139 in 2018. At times, rankings seem counterintuitive. In WHR 2018, Pakistan is the happiest among SAARC countries and India among the least. Some also ask how can countries which have some of the biggest users of anti-depressants like Iceland and Denmark be also among the happiest? If suicide is the biggest manifestation of unhappiness then how can Finland, which has one of the highest suicides rates in the developed world, be the happiest? Different happiness surveys have often yielded contradictory and inconsistent results, putting a question mark on the subjectivity involved in measuring happiness.
