Subject: Diwali celebration without crackers

Sir,

The Supreme Court has passed an order that only environmental friendly lightings or green crackers will be allowed. But people are ignoring both the law and the adverse consequences of bursting crackers especially during Diwali.

Diwali is a meaningful festival. It signifies victory of good over evil and light over darkness. Celebration of Diwali is not wrong but the manner in which it is celebrated is wrong.

Bursting crackers are hazardous to human and the environment. When bursting crackers, the smoke of hazardous gasses are released and pollute the air causing respiratory diseases.

Children are more vulnerable to the toxic substances of crackers and air pollution.

During Diwali Festival excessive bursting of crackers results in thick smog in many cities. This causes breathing problems to the people. Road accidents occurred due to poor visibility because of thick pollution of the air. Many flights are also cancelled.

Apart from the pollution of the air, crackers cause noise pollution which disrupts the sleep of children and infants, the old and the sick, and may also results in hearing problem. The pollutants from crackers cause the dead of birds and animals. The loud bursting sound can be traumatic to our pets and other animals.

Diwali is the festival of lights. We can celebrate it without the disturbance of loud bursting crackers. Diwali is a beautiful festival with all the decorative lights. We don't need to burst harmful crackers. Therefore let us all go green and say "No" to crackers during Diwali celebration. Together we can make a difference by keeping our environment healthy and safe for us to live in.

Yours sincerely,

S.M. KUMAR
