The hack driver seemed to be a simple countryman at first appearance and was ready to help the narrator. The lawyer was in search of Lutkin and hence the hack driver took him to various places where he might find Lutkin. The next day the case came up in the court. As he was unable to find Lutkins, the lawyer was asked to go back to New Mullion with a man who had worked with Lutkins. The lawyer got shocked to find that the hack driver himself was Lutkin. He felt humiliatedand learnt not to be hasty in judging a person.

Bill told the lawyer that Lutkins was a hard fellow to catch . He was always up to something or the other. He owed money to many people, including Bill, and had never even paid anybody a cent. He also said that Oliver played a lot of poker and was good at deceiving people.

Oliver Lutkins: Oliver Lutkins is a crook who lives in the country townlet of New Mullion. Though he lives in a small town, he skillfully defrauds the lawyer who comes to serve a summons on him. He pretends to be Bill Magnuson, the hack driver and handles to cheat the narrator of his cash. He manages to convey to the lawyer that it exists very difficult to outline Lutkins. He brings the lawyer to numerous stores but does not permit the lawyer to directly talk with the people. Over a few hours, Bill brings the narrator all over the townlet where they keep ignoring Lutkins for small periods. He exists also a friendly individual. When the lawyer arrives to New Multi for a second time, Lutkins requests the lawyer for a cup of coffee at his friend’s house. Bill painted Lutkins as a dishonest individual. He owed cash to a lot of individuals. He had a talent for dishonesty. Though he lived in a rural town, he organized to trick and fool a lawyer belonging to the city.
