Explanation:

You could start with civics and the fact that democracy is a participatory sport. Starting local is always a good place to start, city/town council meetings, etc. Lots of council and committee meeting are aired on local television now. Find out what issues are being addressed and might pique someone younger’s interest.

Patriotism for me is participation, love for an ever- changing of country that experiences highs and lows, but strives to keep bettering ourselves and strengthen our union, our Democratic Repubic, as well as foster healthy global relationships. The health of our nation depends on people to shape it.

I would help them to understand that we are but a young, liberal democracy, a grand experiment, and that it's up to all of us to contribute and provide maintenance to keep our democracy alive and functioning for all of us, for we the people, and to grow as a nation. I'd explain that a liberal democracy is representative and what it looks like without one.

Just thoughts rattling around in my head. Hope it makes some sense. Depending on age and personality type, I realize total indifference may be at hand, also. Challenging subject.
