Africa is the world's largest continent in terms of total land area of approximately 30,365,000 square kilometres. The oldest human fossils of our early ancestors have been found in East Africa , which suggests that the evolution of early Humans began in the continents .

Except the Mediterranean Coast , most parts of Africa were unknown to the rest of the world till as late as the 19th Century . Africa was called as the Dark Continent . It was because of inacessbility due to the presence of the vast Sahara desert to the North , dense forests and Swamps in the central equatorial margins , the prevalence of deadly tropical disease and lack of good harbours that discouraged people from approaching the continent.

Africa was explored by both the Europeans and Arabs . David Livingstone and Henry Morton Stanley , two great European explores of the 19th Century in the certain parts of Africa .
