He believed that childhood is the time when children should learn outside the rigid and strict discipline of the schooling system set up by the British. He condemned the British system of education saying that it killed the natural desire of the child to be creative. He wanted children to learn within the natural environment.

Rabindranath Tagore started Shantiniketan in 1901 in a rural area about 100 kms away from Calcutta. He saw this institution as an abode of peace where students could develop their creativity amidst nature. Tagore also believed that education in India should be a combination of Western civilisation with Indian traditions.
