Answer:
Vasco Da Gama was a Portuguese Sailor. He was the first European who went to India through the Cape of Good Hope at the southern end of Africa.King Manuel sent him to try to open up a trade route. He sailed from Lisbon in 1497 on a mission to reach India and open a sea route from Europe to the East. After sailing down the western coast of Africa and rounding the Cape of Good Hope, his expedition made numerous stops in Africa before reaching the trading post of Calicut, India, in May 1498. He failed to make a trade agreement at Calicut because the trade there was controlled by Arabs. At his next trip to Calicut, he found out that the people of Calicut killed the Portuguese he had left behind. During this trip, he attacked and stole from all the Arab and Indian ships he found in the Indian Ocean. Then, he went on to Calicut and took over that city, capturing a lot of wealth, pleasing the King of Portugal. He was given more titles and honours then. In Da Gama received a hero’s welcome back in Portugal. In 1524 he was given the title "Viceroy of the East" at the age of 64. After two months in 1524 he died there of fever and illness. His tomb is in Lisbon.
