When the East India Company of the British enjoyed their monopoly capturing India, they tortured many people including the Nagodas.
The Nagodas were forced to weave for the British company, however, received lower wages in return. They were treated like slaves and worked for survival.
A turning point came when they protested against the policies of the British and their company by cutting off their thumb and denying to work for them further.
