1.An acute shortage of labour in the Caribbean-Martinique, Guadeloupe and Sandomingo led to a triangular slave trade between Europe, America and Africa in the 17th century.
2. French merchants sailed from the port's of Bordeaux of Nantes to the American coast, where they bought slaves from local chieftains and sold them to plantation owners in the Caribbean. The exploitation of slave labours enabled to meet the growing demands of sugar, coffee and indigo in the European markets.
3. The convention in 1794 passed laws to free all slaves in the French over seas possession.However 10 years later, slavery was reintroduced by Napoleon Bonaparte. Slavery was finally abolished in French colonies in 1848.
