Answer:

An alloy means a mixture.

Explanation:

1. The homogeneous mixture of two or more metals or a metal and a a non metal in a fixed proportion is called an alloy.

2. All the properties of an alloy are totally different from the constituents used in it.

3. Alloy helps the metals to resist the corrosion and thereby the metals can be used for a long time.

4. The time for corrosion of metals is also get reduced due to alloys.

5. The method of applying alloy to a metal surface is called as alloying.

6. Alloy is one of the methods to prevent corrosion of metals.

7. Different alloys are used for different purposes.

8. The fixed proportion of metals makes the alloys corrosion resistant and hence they do not get corrode

even they are made up of metals.

Examples:

1. Brass is an alloy made up of copper and zinc.

Brass is generally used for cooking purposes or as cooking utensils.

2. Bronze is an alloy made up of copper ( 90% ) and tin ( 10% ).

Bronze is generally used in ships for their repairing. It is also used as cooking utensils. We all are familiar to another use of bronze i. e. 'bronze medal' given in different competitions.

3. Stainless steel is an alloy made up of iron ( 74% ), carbon ( 8% ) and chromium ( 18% ).

Stainless steel is basically used in kitchens. Many of utensils used in kitchen are made up of stainless steel.

Concepts:

1. Homogeneous mixture:

The mixtures in which all the constituents are get mixed fully and they can't even seen are called homologous mixtures.

Ex. : Mixture of salt and water ( salt solution ).

In this mixture, salt get mixed with water fully. It can't be seen afterwards.

2. Corrosion:

When a metal surface reacts with air ( atmospheric oxygen ) or moisture, its metal oxide is formed which is also called the rust.

And this process of formation of rust is known as corrosion.
