FIR is first information report . With the registration of FIR the police can investigate a crime . It is compulsory for an officer in charge to register an FIR whenever a person gives information about a crime or offence . This information can be given orally or in written form . It should include date , time , place of the offence , details of the offence including a description of events . If known , then identity of the accused person and witness should also be mentioned . The FIR also states the name and address of the complainant . There is a prescribed form in witch the police files an FIR and it is signed by the complainant . The complainant can also take a free copy of FIR .
