Answer:
Endocrine gland such as the pancreas and thyroid gland use the bloodstream to monitor body's internal environment and to communicate with each other through substances called hormones, which are released
into the bloodstream.
Three of the endocrine glands are discussed below:
Adrenal gland: The adrenal glands are triangular in shape and situated on top of the two
kidneys. They secrete a hormone called adrenaline, which prepares the body for action during
times of stress. Hence, it is also called the fight-or-flight hormone. This hormone is secreted
when the body faces situations of excitement, fear or stress. It regulates the heartbeat,
breathing rate and blood pressure. The effect of this hormone is temporary and lasts only for
a few minutes.
Pancreas: Pancreas acts as both an exocrine and an endocrine gland. It secretes digestive
juices as well as hormones. Hence, it is also called a dual gland. The pancreas is located in
the abdomen region, just below the stomach. Certain special cells in the pancreas secrete the
hormone insulin. Insulin regulates the metabolism of sugar in the body.
Ovaries: The ovaries are the egg (ova) producing female reproductive organs. They are also
endocrine glands that secrete the oestrogen and progesterone hormones on stimulation by the
pituitary hormones. Oestrogen is responsible for the appearance of the secondary sexual
characters in females such as changes in body structures and production of eggs, while
progesterone is involved in the changes that take place during the menstrual cycle.
