Answer:

acoustics, a beat is an interference pattern between two sounds of slightly different frequencies, perceived as a periodic variation in volume whose rate is the difference of the two frequencies. With tuning instruments that can produce sustained tones, beats can be readily recognized.

The periodic rise and fall of the loudness of the resultant sound wave, produced by the superposition of two progressive sound waves of equal amplitude but of slightly different frequencies, is called beats.

Properties of Beats

  • Two progressive waves with equal or nearly equal amplitudes, but with a slight difference in their frequencies are allowed to superpose.
  • The amplitude and intensity of the resultant wave increase and decrease periodically.
