  • Several polycyclic aromatic compounds are toxic and carcinogenic.

  • eg. Benzene is oxidized to an epoxide, benzopyrene, in liver Benzopyrene is converted into epoxydiol.

  • These substances can react with DNA and induce mutation leading to uncontrolled growth of certain cells. In this way, they cause cancer in the body.

  • Carcinogenic compounds are produced by incomplete combustion of tobacco, coal and petroleum. Hence tobacco, coal are called cancer causing substances (carcinogenic substances).
