Charaideo was the first capital of Ahom Kingdom although it was changed later. However, the place continued to have significance and housed the maidams or tombs of Ahom rulers. A maidam has a domical superstructure with an underground vault that has one or more chambers. The superstructure has a mound with a pavilion in the shape of a hemisphere on the top. There is an octagonal dwarf wall around the maidam. Out of over 150 maidams present, only 30 have been protected by Archeological Survey of India.

Charaideo was the first permanent capital of the Ahom kingdom established by the first Ahom king Chao Lung Siu-Ka-Pha in 1253 CE.Even though the capital moved to other places over the course of the 600 years of rule, Charaideo remained the symbol of Ahom power. It is now known for its collection of maidams, tumuli or burial mounds of the Ahom kings and Ahom royalty
