the important environmental movement is the chipko andolan which started in the early 1970s in the GARHWAL HIMALAYAS of UTTARKHAND . Like the tribal people of narmada valley, forests are a critical resource for the subsistence of people in hilly and mounyanious area. this is both because of their direct provision of food,fuel and fodder and because of their role in stabilsing soil and water resources.As these forests were being felled for commerce and industry ,villagers sought to protect their livelihood through non violence resistance. chipko means embrace.village women were the meain force for this movement
