Suspended in the nucleoplasm are fine thread-like structure, called chromatin threads. In the nondividing nucleus, they form chromatin net but in dividing nucleus, they condense to form chromosomes. That's why, chromosomes at are
visible only in the cells undergoing division.

Explanation:

  • Chromosomes were first observed by Hofmeister (1848). The term "chromosomes' was given by Waldeyer (1888).

  • During cell division, the chromatin material gets condensed to form distinct structures termed as chromosomes.

  • The chromosomes are not visible in the active nucleus due to their high water content, but are clearly seen during cell division.

  • Eukaryotic cell shows typical chromosomes (chroma = colour, soma = body) and prokaryotic cell shows irregularly folded mass of genetic material called nucleoid.

  • The chromosomes are the nuclear components of special organization, individuality and function.

  • Chromosomes have an ability of self-replication and they play an important role in heredity, variation, mutation and evolution of species.

  • The number of chromosomes is constant for a particular species.

  • Therefore, these have great importance in the determination of the phylogeny and taxonomy of the species.
