Bryophytes are classified under three classes: Hepaticae (Liverworts), Anthocerotae (Hornworts) and Musci (Mosses).

1 HEPATICOPSIDA :

* Its common name is liverworts .

* Sex organ present on dorsal surface of thallus .

* Elaters is generally present .

* sporogenous tissue generally develops from endothecium .

* Exsmple : Riccia , Marvhantia , sphaerocarpus etc .

2 Antheroceropsida

* Its common name is hornworts .

* sex organ present on dorsal surface of thallus .

* Elaters : pseudoelaters are generally present in the capsule .

* sporogenous tissue generally develops from amphithecium and endothecium form sterile colume - lla .

* Example : Anthoceros , Megaceros , Notothylus etc .

Bryopsida

* Its common name is mosses .

* sex organ develops from the superficial cells at the apex of leafly gametophore .

* Elasters are absent .

* sporogenous tissue is generally develops from outer layer of endothecium . Inner layer forms sterile columella .

* Example : Funaria , sphagnum , polytrivhum .
