Most of these officials are involved in face-to-face contact with passengers that poses risks for themselves. A slight mistake or negligence could prove hazardous for them and others.
"Challenge is to ensure that we do not catch the virus. Back home after office, I make sure that distance is maintained with family members. Thankfully, my wife and other family members support me. We avoid contact with each other, especially with senior citizens and kids as much as possible," said an APHO member. Every time an official leaves the airport for home, he/she has to go for a medical check-up.
Officials designated to scan passengers have been provided with all safety gears like high-quality face masks (N95), hand gloves and other equipment. On a given day, Terminal 3 witnesses a footfall of around 1 lakh passengers. At least 20, 000 passengers are undergoing scanning in a 12-hour shift.
NOIDA
In neighbouring Noida, the fight against Coronavirus, it seems, has taken over the lives of the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of Gautam Buddh Nagar, Anurag Bhargava, and his staff. Bhargava, 59, has been attending meetings with his staff, taking calls of those with fears about the virus or visiting residential complexes and offices to prevent a potential outbreak. He is personally tracking contacts of patients or suspects.
His staffers say that on certain days, he even skips meals. On one such day, on Saturday, when Noida registered its fifth positive case, Bhargava rushed to the affected housing complex in Sector 77. He also educates residents to do door-to-door screening.
"My wife and children live in Lucknow. They are worried about me," Bhargava said. In another assignment on Saturday, Bhargava scrutinised a list of people from Noida who came in contact with Coronavirus positive singer Kanika Kapoor.
He said his team works 24*7 to keep the COVID-19 spread from entering community transmission stage. Though he receives hundreds of calls and text & WhatsApp messages, he manages to keep himself calm and composed. He makes sure that no important call is missed.
"I can't miss any call, as there are times people with travel history and symptoms are directly calling me," Bhargava said. Officials like Bhargava are the second line of defence after airport authorities, as they try to prevent the situation from escalating to the community transmission stage.
Seventy-nine fresh COVID-19 cases were reported in India on Saturday, taking the total number to 315 even as the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) issued guidelines for a new testing strategy for effective tracking of patients. In Delhi, six new cases were added on Saturday taking the total number to 26.
GURUGRAM
In Gurugram, another NCR town, Civil Surgeon Dr Jaswant Singh Punia leads a team which works for 16 to 18 hours each day at the hospital. "Obtaining information about infected persons with foreign travel history is the most challenging job. Chances of infection are always high so we have to be extra careful about us and about our families. We put national duties ahead," Punia said.
