On 12 March 1930, Gandhi started the Dandi march from Sabarmati Ashram towards the small coastal village of Dandi. He marched against the state monopoly in manufacturing and selling of salt. Gandhi after reaching dandi broke the salt laws by manufacturing salt. It led to the begining of the Civil Disobedience Movement.

On 31st january 1930 mahatma gandhi sent a letter to viceroy lord Irwin stating 11 demands .some of them were of general interest .But the most stirring of all the demands was the abolition of salt tax .Mahatma Gandhi found a powerful symbol in it . Salt was something consumed by both rich and poor . Tax on salt and government monopoly over its production revealed the oppressive face of the British rule .Gandhiji states that the 11 demands were to be fulfilled by 11th March 1930 otherwise he would launch civil disobedience movement.Irwin was unwilling to negotiate.Hence Gandhiji started his salt March / Dandi March. He started from his shabarmathi ashram to the Gujarat’s coast of Dandi . He started in 12 th March 1930.He was accompanied by 78 of his trusted volunteers. He walked 24 miles 10 miles each day in 24 days . Millions of people came to hear his talks including women . He reached Dandi on 6th April 1930 and violated the salt law by manufacturing salt by boiling sea water.
