Deficiency diseases are the diseases that are caused due to lack of certain nutrients in the body. Some examples are -

  • Night Blindness - It is caused due to lack of Vitamin A. The person suffering from this disease cannot see in dim light. This may lead to complete blindness. Vitamin A helps eyes to stay healthy. It is present in spinach, carrot, papaya, mango, butter, liver and milk.
  • Beriberi - It is caused due to lack of Vitamin B1. It affects the nerves and muscles of the body. The patient develops numbness in hand and feet. It is present in milk, meal, cereals and green vegetables.
  • Scurvy - It is caused due to deficiency of Vitamin C. It leads to spongy, swallen and bleeding gums. A diet with plenty of citrus fruits like oranges, lemon, amla, tomatoes, and sprouted grains can prevent this disease.
  • Goitre - It is caused by deficiency of mineral iodine. The glands of the throat swell up. This may lead to stunned physical and mental development in children to prevent it, iodized salt must be taken in diet. Sea food is also rich source of iodine.
