Detergents are used to remove dirt and grease from clothes. Detergents are basic in nature, they turn red litmus blue. They are mainly sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide. They remove dirt as it is basically acidic in nature. When basic detergents reacts with the dirt it neutralizes and is removed.
