The sperm determines the sex of the infant in humans. Because approximately half of the sperm gametes include the X chromosome, which will result in a girl, and approximately half of them carry the Y chromosome, which will result in a boy, the sperm gamete is heterogamatic. The ova gamete, on the other hand, is homogametic, meaning that all of its cells have the X chromosome. As a result, the ova gamete has no effect on the sex of the infant. When a sperm penetrates the egg and fertilisation occurs, two results are possible: XX or a girl, and XY or a boy.
