Diabetes is a condition in which the blood glucose levels in the body increase. While this is the symptom, the reason behind this is that the glucose in the blood isn't getting transported into the cells. Once the glucose goes from the blood into the cells, it can be converted to energy when required.

Diabetes are of three types:

★Type 1 : Also known as insulin dependent diabetes. Beta cells in the pancreas gets destroyed due to auto-immune reaction where the body’s defence system attacks the pancreatic cells, as a result of which very little or no insulin is produced which leads to the increased level of glucose in the blood.

★Type 2: Also called non-insulin dependent diabetes, characterised by insulin resistance and relative insulin deficiency. Occurs due to hereditary factors and lifestyle risk factors including insufficient physical activity and being overweight or obesity.

★Gestational Diabetes: It is a type of diabetes where blood glucose levels increases during pregnancy. Most gestational diabetes goes away after birth.

•Increased urination (sometimes as often as every hour)

•Unusual weight loss or gain

•In women, frequent vaginal infections

•Slow-healing sores or cuts

★All types of diabetes are treatable. Patients are treated with regular insulin injections, as well as a special diet and exercise, tablets, but sometimes insulin injections are also required. Complications would be developed if diabetes is not adequately controlled.
