Discovery of cell:

The name ‘cell’ was coined by Robert Hooke, in the year 1665, after observing a piece of cork under his microscope. He saw structures which looked like enclosures or cells.

In the year 1675, Anton van Leeuwenhoek observed a sample of pond water under the microscope, he saw the presence of living organisms which were otherwise invisible to the naked eye.

Later in the year 1838 and 1839, Dr Matthias Schleiden had discovered the plant cells and Theodore Schwann had discovered the animal cell, respectively. Together they had formulated the first cell theory.
