Explanation:

The process of separation of light into its component colours while passing through a medium is called the dispersion of light.

The refractive index of a medium is different for different colours.Even when white light enters a single medium like glass, the angles of refraction are different for different colours. So when the white light coming from the sun through the air, enters any refracting medium, it emerges as a spectrum of seven colours.

Dispersion of Light' can be defined as the splitting of white light when it passes through a glass prism into its constituent spectrum of colors (i.e. violet, indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange and red). Dispersion figuratively means 'distribution' and hence that's exactly what is happening in the picture above..
