The Doctrine of Lapse was a policy of annexation practiced by Lord Dalhousie during his tenure as governor general of India from the year 1848 to 1856.

  • As per the Doctrine of Lapse, if any Indian ruler died without having left a male heir, then his kingdom must automatically turn over to the British.
  • Dalhousie annexed the States of Satara, Jaipur, Jhansi, Nagpur, Udaipur following the doctrine of the lapse.
  • The State of Mysore was the only state that was not annexed by the East India company under the doctrine of lapse, despite not having a natural heir
