Paintings and carvings above the rock is rock art. They are petrograph and petroglyphs technically. It is important because they represent the earliest form of creativity of Human mind. They symbolise the beginning of all the art forms in the world today.

Many of the caves in which these early people lived have paintings on the walls.
Some of the best examples are from Madhya Pradesh andsouthern Uttar Pradesh.
These paintings show wild animals, drawn with great accuracy and skill.
