an election petition refers to the procedure for challenging the result of parliamentary election.

an election petition calling in question any election can be presented on one or more of the following grounds

1. a candidate who has been declared elected was not qualified.

2. that any nomination was improperly rejected

3. that some corrupt practice was committed by a returned candidate

4. that the result was materially affected

if any of these is true the high court where the petition is submitted declares the election of the returned candidate to be void
