Answer:

Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) is a cellular organelle. It is the transport network for molecules going to specific places, as compared to molecules that float freely in the cytoplasm. The endoplasmic reticulum is in cells that have a nucleus: in eukaryote cells but not in prokaryote cells.

Endoplasmic Reticulam is membrane-bound organelle with large network of tubes and sheets. It has two types :

(A) Rough Endoplasmic Reticulam : It has ribosomes on its surface which are the sites of protein synthesis. In short they secrete proteins.

(B) Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulam : It doesn’t have any type of ribosomes. They are sites of lipids synthesis. In short they secrete lipids. They are also involved in detoxification or poisonous substances.

Note : Proteins and lipids produced by Both Endoplasmic Reticulam are used in the formation of cell membrane of the cell.

Also Endoplasmic Reticulam provides surface for biochemical activities performed by the cell.

Hope it helps u !!!
