A RAINBOW IS A NATURAL SPECTRUM APPEARING IN THE SKY AFTER A RAIN SHOWER. IT IS CAUSED BY DISPERSION OF SUNLIGHT BY TINY WATER DROPLETS PRESENT IN THE ATMOSPHERE. A RAINBOW IS ALWAYS FORMED IN A DIRECTION OPP. TO THAT OF SUN. THE WATER DROPLETS ACT AS SMALL PRISMS. THEY REFRACT AND DISPERSE THE SUNLIGHT, THEN REFLECT IT INTERNALLY, AND FINALLY REFRACT IT AGAIN WHEN IT COMES OUT OF THE RAINDROP. DUE TO DISPERSION OF LIGHT AND INTERNAL REFLECTION, DIFF. COLORS REACH THE OBSERVERS EYE.

-basically white light splits into band of 7 colours when passed through a spectrum

- in case of rainbow the the rain droplets act as spectrum and sun as source of white light

-the white light splits into seven colours(VIBGYOR) and we can see the rainbow.
