A Brief Note on Galvanic Corrosion:

  • The corrosion which occurs when two metals having different electrode potentials come in contact with one another in an electrolyte is known as galvanic corrosion.
  • It is also known as bimetallic or dissimilar metal corrosion.
  • In Galvanic corrosion, one metal acts as a cathode, and the other one acts as an anode.
  • An Electrochemical reaction occurs and the anode starts to dissolve into the electrolyte.
  • Due to the fast corrosion of anode metals, the corrosion of cathode metals becomes slower or even stops.
  • Galvanic Corrosion can be prevented by using Electrical Insulation between the two Metals or a galvanic insulator.
