Any substance that has the ability to cause destruction to humans and the environment is termed as a hazardous substance. They can be inflammable, explosive, oxidising, corrosive, and toxic to the surrounding environment. A particular substance can have one or more of the above-mentioned properties.

Hazardous substances can be also radioactive in nature and can cause substantial loss and injury. These are used according to several given laws or guidelines and manhandling them can lead to disaster. Examples are acids, pesticides, disinfectants, etc.
