→The Himalayas are the youngest mountains in the world.

→They are structurally folded mountains, form an arc of about 2,400 km long from west to east.

→The width varies from 400 km in Kashmir to 150 km in Arunachal Pradesh.

→The altitudinal variations are greater in the eastern part than in the western part.

→There are four parallel ranges in its longitudinal extent.

→Zaskar range lies west of Himalayas and Indus gorge is beyond it.

Short note on Himalayan Mountains:

  • The Himalayan mountain range lies in Asia which largely separates the Indian subcontinent from the Tibetan plateau. They are formed as a result of the subduction of the Indian tectonic plate under the Eurasian plate.
  • However, the building process of these mountains is still active. Several highest peaks from the world and India lies in this mountain range. They are designed as outer – Siwalik range, lower Himalayas and the great Himalayan range.
  • The Himalayas run from the north most of Jammu and Kashmir to down of the north-eastern state of Tripura. It is the biggest mountain range in the world. It homes many fauna and fauna, jagged peak valleys, glaciers, unfathomable river gorges. They play an important role in the climate of India.
