dolf Hitler (April 20, 1889 - April 30, 1945) was the leader of Nazi Germany during World War II. He came to power after World War I because he represented a beacon of hope for the economically devastated people of Germany. Commonly thought of as the worst person who ever lived, Hitler masterminded the 'Final Solution to the Jewish Problem'; the Holocaust. Taking place alongside World War II, Hitler systematically had six million Jewish people and five million others killed at death camps located across Nazi-controlled territories. The final death count from Hitler's actions was close to eleven million people killed for being 'undesirable' to a man seeking a 'master race' of Aryans; a bitter irony, given that Hitler himself was not an example of his own Aryan ideal.
In his youth, Hitler had intended to enroll in an art school in Vienna, but failed the entrance examination. He enlisted for the First World War, but never rose above the rank of Corporal. This was part of the reason Weimar Republic President Paul von Hindenburg did not like Hitler; he felt he was not high enough in a chain of command to control a country properly. However, Hitler became a commander and a leading figure in the rise of the Nazi Party, eventually succeeding in taking Germany's highest office. From 1933 until 1945, Hitler ruled over Germany as he saw fit.
During his rule, Hitler gradually built up Germany's military forces, still devastated by World War I, and began occupying neighboring territories until Germany's invasion of Poland in 1939 prompted other European powers to finally declare war. However, as World War II wore on and the Allied armies marched their way toward Berlin in 1945 with victory all but certain, Hitler, holed up in an underground bunker, took his own life.
