Adolf Hitler's road to power in Germany began in September 1919, when he joined the political organization known at the time as the Deutsche Arbeiterpartei - DAP. In 1920, the name was changed to the Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei, better known as the Nazi Party.
Explanation:
- The Nazi Party was anti-Marxist, opposed the democratic postwar government of the Weimar Republic and the Treaty of Versailles, and advocated strong nationalism and violent antisemitism.
- Hitler was appointed leader after threatening to leave the party because he was one of its finest speakers.
- Hitler's readership grew after the Beer Hall Putsch in November 1923 and the subsequent publication of his book Mein Kampf (My Struggle).
- Throughout the late 1920s and early 1930s, the Nazis amassed enough electoral support to become the Reichstag's largest political party, and Hitler's combination of political acuity, deception, and cunning converted the party's non-majority but plurality status into effective governing power in the ailing Weimar Republic of 1933.
- Hitler formed an absolute dictatorship once in power. He obtained the president's approval for new elections. The Japanese attacked US soldiers at Pearl Harbor the next day, on December 7. Hitler was obliged to declare war due to his alliance with Japan.
