Answer:

The lymphatic system has multiple interrelated functions: It is responsible for the removal of interstitial fluid from tissues. It absorbs and transports fatty acids and fats as chyle from the digestive system. It transports white blood cells to and from the lymph nodes into the bones.

Lymphatic system:

Lymph (a colourless fluid) and it's associated parts constitute lymphatic system.

It consists of:

  1. Lymph
  2. Lymph capillaries
  3. Lymph vessels
  4. Lymph nodes

Lymph:

  • Lymph is a colourless or straw coloured fluid connective tissue.

Lymph capillaries:

  • Lymph capillaries are present interwoven with the blood capillaries, which are blind at one end.

Lymph vessels:

  • Lymph vessels resemble the veins in structure but have thinner walls and more valves.
  • Lymph capillaries join to form lymph vessels.

Lymph nodes:

  • The enlargement in lymph vessels at some intervals, which can be seen like beads in a string throughout vessels is called lymph nodes.

Functions of lymph:

  • It acts as a middleman because it helps in exchange of various materials between the blood and the body tissues.

  • It carries lymphocytes and antibodies from lymph nodes to the blood.

  • It destroys microorganism and foreign particles in the lymph nodes.

  • It controls the concentration of proteins in the tissue fluid.

  • It helps in removing nitrogenous waste and carbon dioxide from the tissue into the blood.

  • It also serves at thermostat to equalise body temperature.
