This is popularly known as a congress party .This is one of the oldest party of the world and was found in 1885. The congress party has played a dominant role in Indian politics at the national level and state level for several decades after India's independence. Since the first general elections in the year 1952,the congress party had in power continuously till 1977.After that,it came back to power in 1980 and remain till 1989.The congress party once again came back to power in 1991 for another five years.

It played an important role in Indian politics at the national and state levels after the independence. Under Nehru the party tried to build a modern secular democratic republic in India.It remained in power till 1977 and then from 1980-1989 but after that its support declined. The party supports secularnism and welfare of weaker sections and minorities. It supports new economic reforms with a human face. It emerged as a single largest party with 145 seats in 2004 elections and is currently leading the ruling United Progressive Alliance coalition government at the centre.
