India has the second largest road network across the world over 4 million kilometer.It transport more than 60% of all goods in the country.
Transportation has increased gradually over the years with the improvement in connectivity between cities, towns and villages within the country.
Roads carry almost 90 per cent of the country's passengers traffic and over 60 per cent of its freight.
Sales of automobiles and movement of freights by roads is growing rapidly. Cognizant of expansion of road network to cater for the increased traffic and movement of goods has led to government to set earmarked 20 per cent of the investment US$ 1 trillion reserved for the infrastructure during their 12th Five-year plan ending 2017 to develop the roads.
Roads and bridges infrastructure in India are projected to grow at a compound Annual Growth Rate of 17.4 per cent over FY12-17.
Construction of highway has also reached all-time high of more than 6000 km from 2015.

Roads are clearly a cost-efficient and accessible mode of transportation. It extends beyond the length and breadth of a nation and can be used by various sections of the community. It forms national integration and is effective in the socio-economic development of a country. India forms the most extensive roadway network of the world. This network has consisted of National and State Highways, Expressways, Major District Roads and other Village and District roads.
