• The first attempt to produce iron and steel on modern lines was made in 1830 at Port Novo ( Tamil Nadu ) .

• Today , India is the fifth largest crude steel producing country in the world .

• The main raw materials used in the iron and steel industry are iron ore , manganese , limestone , silica , chromate , feldspar , scrap iron flux and fuel .
