To protest against the Rowlatt Act, Gandhi gave a call to observe complete hartal on April 6 1919. People responded with enthusiasm and all business throughout the country came to a standstill. The response was more pronounced in Amritsar and Lahore.
The law and order situation was handed over to General Dyer, who issued an order prohibiting public meetings and assemblies. A public meeting was held on April 13, 1919 on Baisakhi day at Jallianwala Bagh protest against the Rowlatt act or The Black Bill and the arrest of the leaders. The people were unarmed and peaceful. General Dyer, incensed that his order were being disobeyed, ordered his troops to open fire upon the unarmed crowd. The shooting went on for ten minutes.
Thousands were killed, and many jumped into a well in the park and died and many others were wounded and left unattended.
