In Amritsar, the arrest of two prominent leaders, Dr Saifuddin Kitchlew Dr Satyapal, let to strong protests. Unaware of ban on public meetings the people of Amritsar held a meeting at the Jallianwala Bagh on 13th April 1919. General Dyer, a military commander of Amritsar block the parks Narrow exit and ordered indiscriminate shooting. Hundreds of people were killed. This stuned the nation.

\textbf{Jallianwala Bagh incident}

On 10 April , the police in Amritsar fired upon peaceful processions , provoking widespread attack on banks, post offices and railway stations. Martial law was impose and General Dyer took command.

On 13 the infamous Jallianwala Bagh incident took place. On that day a crowd of villagers who had come to Amritsar to attend the fair gathered in the enclosed ground Jallianwala Bagh. Being from outside the city, They were unaware of the Martial Law had been imposed. Dyer entered the area , blocked the exit points, and opened fire from crowd , killing hundreds. his object as he declared letter was to produce a moral effect to create in the mind of satyagrahis a feeling of terror and awe.

As the news of Jallianwala Bagh spread crowds took to the streets in many North Indian towns. There were strides clashes with the police and attack on government building. the government respond with brutal reparations seeking to humiliate and terrorize people: satyagrahis were forced to rub their noses on the ground and salute to all Sahib.

People were flogged and villages were bomed. seeing violence spread Mahatma Gandhi called of movement.
