The Jallianwalah Bagh Massacre, also known as the Amritsar Massacre was a massacre that happened in Amritsar, in 1919.On April 13, 1919, British Indian Army soldiers started shooting at an unarmed crowd of men, women and children.
Jallianwala Bagh massacre was caused by British General Dyer who want to teach Indians a lesson and not to indulge in any form of protests against the British. Story : General Dyer ordered open fire on the pilgrims. It is reported by the British that 379 died while 1200 were wounded .
The villages were widely bombed, people were flogged and Satyagrahis were mostly ill treated. The non- cooperation movement which had been launched earlier was forced to stop by Gandhi as the result was violent. This led to the emergence the Khilafat Movement which brough the Hindus and Muslims together.
The casualty number quoted by the Congress was more than 1,500, with approximately 1,000 being killed. Indian nationalist Swami Shraddhanand wrote to Gandhi of 1500 deaths in the incident.
