shifting cultivation is the most primitive type of agriculture practised by the tribal people living in tropical forests of South East Asian countries . in this type of agriculture people clear the forest by cutting and burning the trees before cultivating the land . the ash provides manure to the crops . maize and crops like yams and cassava are grown . after one or two years , once soil loses its fertility they shift to another piece of land . this is called shifting cultivation

Shifting Cultivation

It is also known as slash and burn agriculture. Crops are grown in the field by cutting trees and plants .After that trees are burned . It is mainly done in mountainous area. It is traditional form of farming.There are many advantages and disadvantages of sifting cultivation .Such as the ash helps in making fertility of soil, it increases the enrichment of many nutrients such as pottash . Disadvantages are such as it causes degradation of forest ,it can even cause pollution. It is mainly done in north -east states.Crops like maize, yam, potatoes and cassava are grown.
