The large intestine is the last part of the gastrointestinal tract that performs the important task of absorbing water and vitamins while converting digested food into feces. The length of the large intestine is about 1.5 m in length and 2.5 inches in diameter in the living body.

The large intestine is wider than the small intestine, but it's comparatively shorter in length. It has three parts : the caecum, colon and rectum. The caecum is a pouch shaped structure that connects the small intestine to the large intestine. It leads to colon. Colon is the largest part of the large intestine, and is further sub divided into three parts : ascending, transverse, and descending colon. Rectum is the lowest part of the intestine. It is located at the end of the descending colon.
