Lichens :

  • Symbiotic associations between algal ( phycobiont ) fungal component ( mycobiont ).

  • The phycobionts are autotrophic and mycobionts are heterotrophic.

  • Algae prepare food for fungi.

  • Fungi provide shelter and absorb nutrients for alga.

  • They are very good pollution indicators.

  • They don't grow in polluted areas.

  • They are non-vascular plants ie. they have no roots, stems, or leaves.

  • Their presence indicates that there's absence of pollution in that area, and their absence indicates that the area is polluted.
