louis xvi was the last king from the bourbon dynasty which ended in 1792. he ascended the throne at 1774. he was just 20 years old. he had been helping usa in the american revolution from 1776 to 1778 against great britain who had taken usa in their rule after 1763 when the seven years' war was going on brutally. due to this, the treasury of france got empty and to refill the treasury, he levied a tax on the third estate as the first and second estates didn't have to pay taxes, known by the name "tallie". he called up an estates general meeting on 5 may 1789, which consisted of 300 members each for the 1st and 2nd estates respectively and 600 members of the 3rd estate. in that meeting, members of the 3rd estate demanded voting rights for each and every member of the estates general. but, as was the tradition that each estate had one voting right and louis xvi wanted to continue this tradition, he rejected their demand. with that, the third walked out of the estates general and decided to form a constitution for france which they did by 1791 and they declared france as a constitutional monarchy. following this, louis xvi decided to shake hands with austria and prussia and hope to "recapture" france but before that the members of the third estate or the national assembly as it came to be known then, declared france a republic and after some months in 1792, louis xvi and his queen, marie antoinette, were captured after they were trying to escape from france. afterwards, louis xvi was guillotined by maximillian robespierre in 1793 and the queen marie antoinette was also given the same punishment same after.
