The Sri Lankan government adopted the policy of majoritarianism to establish Sinhala Supremacy.

  • In 1956 an act was passed making Sinhala the only official language of the country.
  • Policies were made that favoured Sinhala applicants for universities positions and government jobs.
  • Buddhism was fostered and declared as the national religion.

These measures taken by the Sri Lankan government led to conflicts between the Tamils and Sinhalese which soon turned into a civil war, which came to an end in 2009.
